Marriage and Family

Required Text: Knox, David & Schacht, Carolyn. Choices in Relationships - An Introduction to Marriage and the Family (11th Edition).
Class Time: 9:10a.m. to 10:05a.m.
Class Location: Clement Hall
Dates: January 18 to May 3 (Final Exam)

Objective:
This course will provide an introduction to significant research findings about relationships that lead to marriage and the establishment of a family. Included will be information about social policy, opportunities for self-assessment, and research data comparing relationship trends in the U.S. and around the world.

Reading Assignments/Quizzes/Exams:
There will be FOUR quizzes over assigned reading, graded classwork, as well as a Mid-Term Exam and a Final Exam.Additionally there will be a MID-TERM EXAM and a FINAL EXAM.

Extra Points:
Opportunities to earn extra points which will be added to the chapter quizzes will be announced in class. You must be present to earn these points and/or turn in the extra points assignment at the scheduled test time. There will be no provision for extra points for any make up quiz or assignment.

Requests to make-up quizzes that are missed for any reason must be in writing and MUST be accompanied by a written excuse for the absence.

All quizzes and exams will include class presentations as well as all reading assignments from the textbook.

Group Project:
Class members will participate in a group project that is worth 25% of your grade. Project groups and assignments will be made during the first week of class. Written parts of the project must be turned in on the assigned date or points will be deducted for being late. TURNING IN YOUR ASSIGNMENT AHEAD OF SCHEDULE WILL AVOID THIS PENALTY IN THE EVENT OF AN UNFORSEEN EMERGENCY. The CLASS PRESENTATION (Assignment No. 4) MUST BE ON THE SCHEDULED DATE. CHECK YOUR CALENDAR CAREFULLY TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE A CONFLICT OF ANY KIND FOR THIS DATE. If there is a presentation date conflict this can ONLY be changed in consultation with the instructor.

How Your Grade Will Be Calculated:

Grading Scale:

90% - 100% = A
80% - 89% = B
70% - 79% = C
60% - 69% = D
Less than 60% = F

Attendance:

Attendance records will be kept in accordance with University policy.
