Course Description

What exactly is women?s studies, and why should this topic be explored in the 21st century? What is feminism and what qualities (really) make one a feminist? What does it mean to be a female in present-day America? What values, behaviors, norms, destinies and opportunities are attached to this identity?

This course proposes a critical reflection on these questions through an examination of women?s lives and experiences from feminist sociological, political and philosophical perspectives. We will explore the ways in which gender identities (your own and everyone else?s) are constructed; how systems of gender inequality are created and maintained; how they intertwine with race, class, sexuality, age and ability. In so doing, we will examine the ways in which women have been victims of oppression and agents of change. The expectation of this course is that you will learn not only about gender but also more about yourselves and how you personally do gender.
