White Noise Reading Journal

Overview

Your reading journal is a place to document your analysis of the novel White Noise by Don DeLillo and to generate a set of evidence you can draw from in your essay.

Your journal is located on the right hand menu at the very top under "Course Home." It is the link "My Journal." To create a new entry you simply click on "Make a new journal entry."

Requirements

To organize your analysis of the novel you are to focus your reading on finding passages which fit into the following four themes: Consumption, Simulacra, Race (Whiteness), and White Noise. Each post you make in your journal should discuss a passage that is related to one of these four themes.

For each set of chapters you are assigned, you are to locate and record in your journal two key moments in the text that deal with one of these four themes. That's two entries for each time you are assigned a portion of the book to read.

For example:

You discover on page 10 that the novel has a really interesting section wherein the main character, Jack, hears a washing machine and thinks about death. You would determine this fits into the white noise theme. You would create a new entry with a subject giving the theme and page number, e.g. White Noise - Page 10.

In the body of the entry you are to write a short paragraph describing what literally takes place and your close reading of that incident focusing on what it means.
