Photographic film (also known as film stock) has traditionally been the medium for capturing and showing motion pictures, hence the term "film." A motion picture can also be referred to as a picture, a picture show, a moving picture, a photoplay, or a flick. In the United States, the most common word is "film," while in Europe, "movie" is preferred. The big screen, the silver screen, the movies, and film are all common words for the industry in general; the last of these is widely used as an umbrella concept in academic texts and critical essays. The word sheet was also used instead of screen in the early years.
